After our 29% increase in growth for our sixth grade students in Math on the 2012 MCAS, we have used a Federal Grant to provide extended time for all of our students.
Extended Time gives students top-flight instruction from 7:20-4:15 Monday through Thursday and 7:20-11:40 on Fridays.
The Irving School has partnered with three main partners to expand its program for sixth, seventh and eighth grade students to meet the needs and interests of our students until 4:15 Monday through Thursday. The Irving teaching staff and the partners work together particularly closely during fifth and sixth period classes.
New Aspects of Extended Learning for 2012-2013
Fifth Period: 1:35-2:40: Partners support Boston Public School teachers in the teaching of Academic League, an academic support program targeted for each student’s greatest needs.
Sixth Period: 2:45-4:15 p.m Enrichment Block: Partners and Boston Public School teachers lead fun Enrichment Activities, ranging from sports to the arts to computer animation.
More On Enrichment
Sixth Graders work with Tenacity, AIP, and Citizen Schools during Enrichment block.
Citizen Schools: Offers a variety of elective activities, math interventions, homework help, and apprenticeships in which students work with a professional in an industry, legal or artistic field and complete a project with a group of students related to that field.
Tenacity: Tenacity develops students reading and writing skills while learning to play tennis.
Alliance for Inclusion and Prevention (AIP): Students participate in a rich array of artistic and athletic activities while developing their social and leadership skills through groups run by social workers and social workers in-training.
Seventh and eighth grade students participate in plays, choral programs, visual arts classes, and play interscholastic sports during Enrichment Time.
At the Irving Middle School, we hold the entire Irving community responsible for student outcomes.
Staff, students and parents make a pledge each year via the Irving Home-School Compact.
